Email on the move (Push email)
Over recent years, the use of emails has become the major form of business communication. This has been catered for with programs such as Outlook and web applications such as Hotmail.
However, increasingly we are expected to be able to receive our emails whilst out of the office and to this end there are a number of technologies available to support this.
Firstly, a technology know as "Push Email" is used with Blackberry and Windows Mobile devices. Although Blackberry were first to market a successful push email system, Microsoft have had their own system up and running since Windows Server 2003 was updated in 2007.
Due to the popularity of the Blackberry system, clients often ask us for Blackberrys when they are actually asking us for a push email system.
Sometimes the Blackberry systems are more suitable, other times the Windows Mobile systems are better, it depends on your existing I.T. setup.
For people who do not have a Windows 2003 Server (or later), often adding the Blackberry software to an existing server is the best solution.
For companies who already have a Windows 2003 server, the cost of implemeting a Windows Mobile system will be cheaper than an equivelant Blackberry system as no further software is required.
Mobile broadband
This technology has enjoyed a period of growth recently due to a combination of wide availability, competitive pricing and ease of implementation.
It is basically a way of connecting a laptop to the internet wirelessly. The technology relies upon a 3G network connecting to your laptop via a USB device (often called a dongle).
